John P. Murtha’s keel was laid down on June 6, 2012 at Ingalls Shipbuilding, Pascagoula, Mississippi. She was launched on October 30, 2014, with her christening on March 21, 2015. Donna S. Murtha, the congressman’s daughter, is the ship’s sponsor. The formal shipboard commissioning will be held on 8 October 2016 at Penn’s Landing, Philadelphia, the port just a few hours east on I-76 from Congressman Murtha’s district in Cambria County, PA. The commissioning will not only honor Pennsylvania’s longest serving congressman and decorated combat veteran, it will also form an enduring alliance between the people of the congressman’s district and the ship and her crew. The Commissioning Committee for the USS John P. Murtha asks for your participation and support for the time-honored ceremony and associated events.
